Our Verdict
The Mezzo D-10 is a fast folder in every sense. It has been designed with a definite nod towards on road performance with a handling characteristic that could be described as crisp and fast, primarily due to the light weight aluminium frame and fork that transfers considerably more of your effort into forward motion than some of the more flexible or suspended folders. This may not suit everyone, if you are looking for something with a little more bouncy comfort then perhaps a Birdy or Brompton may be more appropriate, but for those that enjoy riding a little quicker the rigid framed nature of the bike will undoubtedly appeal.
The frame build quality is extremely good with quality hinges and secure clasps that click into the lock position with a reassuring 'clunk'. This is complemented by a great specification with quality key components from Shimano within the 10 speed deraillieur transmission.
The fold is perhaps not as instantly intuitive as some other folders but once familiar it is just as quick and actually quite ingenious, making the folded size competitively small and well suited to taking on public transport or being stashed in a boot, cupboard or locker.
What set's this bike apart from many other folders, and indeed what puts in in direct competition as an alternative to a Brompton is the consideration that has been applied to the luggage option which are available. The integral rear rack has been designed to accommodate a choice of bespoke Mezzo bags, so whether you require something small and compact to carry a few everyday ride essentials, or something more suited to be used as an office bag the options are there.
In summary we would describe the Mezzo as a very capable every day folding bike which we would happily use for commuting and recreational rides alike. Add to this the fact that it was designed and tested in the UK and it's hard not to find yourself drawn to the D-9.
