Our Verdict: If you are looking for a performance folder the Mezzo D-9 is fast, light and stiff with a clever fold that packs it down to a size that's a doddle to take on the train.

Our Verdict

The first thing that strikes you about the Mezzo D-9 is the look, the elegantly curved aluminium main frame is an indication of the understated quality of this bike that you will come to appreciate the more you use it. When Jon Whyte and his team (ex Formula 1 suspension designer and the same man behind the UK designed Whyte bikes) set out to design a folding bike they undoubtedly had the Brompton in their sights when they set their target market. As such, the Mezzo is a great alternative to those who may be considering a Brompton but would like something that feels a little stiffer and more performance orientated.

The frame build quality is extremely good with quality hinges and secure clasps that click into the lock position with a reassuring 'clunk'. This is complemented by a great specification with quality key components from Shimano within the 10 speed deraillieur transmission.

The fold is perhaps not as instantly intuitive as some other folders but once familiar it is just as quick and actually quite ingenious, making the folded size competitively small and well suited to taking on public transport or being stashed in a boot, cupboard or locker.

Consideration has been given to the luggage option which are available, with an integral rear rack that has been designed to accommodate a choice of bespoke Mezzo bags, so whether you require something small and compact to carry a few everyday ride essentials, or something more suited to be used as an office bag the options are there.

In summary we would describe the Mezzo as a very capable every day folding bike which we would happily use for commuting and recreational rides alike. Add to this the fact that it was designed and tested in the UK and it's hard not to find yourself drawn to the D-9.

After much deliberation and many test rides I opted for the Mezzo over a Brompton. The Mezzo is more stable when doing pace thanks (Im told) to the odd looking stem design. It doesnt fold as small as a Brompton but is pretty close and still small enough for my train commute. Cheaper than a comparable Brompton and lighter as well. Shame there arent colour choices like Brompton offer as Id dearly have liked a Burgundy bicycle. Took me a little while to get to grips with the fold in store but now only two weeks on I look like a seasoned pro at the station.
